Where we know how many episodes a series gives away before its paywall, the ones you can watch furthest into for free come first; otherwise the shorter ones do, because a 40-episode series is a smaller commitment than an 80-episode one. We hold a real free-episode figure for 79 of the 1197 series here, all on ReelShort — for everything else that first sort key simply has nothing to work with, and we would rather say so than pretend the order means more than it does.
